As one door closes another door opens. What an awesome attitude to have about change. Unfortunately, as the door shuts sometimes it sticks or one gets his or her finger caught in the door jam and it hurts. Change is scary and sometimes it hurts. Not, "stabbed in the gut hurt", and not " my heart is split in two" hurt, but rather the kind of hurt that confuses. The kind of hurt that makes a person question "What will happen?", "What is next?" and "What in the world am I thinking?" This is where trust and faith comes into play. I know I am on the right path because I have prayed about my decisions and consulted many wise people for advice. Like Henry David Thoreau stated, I have built my "castles in the clouds" and have a strong foundation on which to build. I have always had the travel bug and I have always wanted to live overseas. I did not do it as a high school student or a college student because I was too busy working and living in the moment. As I look back, however, I see this work, this schooling and the experiences that I had as the building blocks of this lofty goal. My blog will be about the next two years of living and teaching in a foreign country. I have much to do before I go and hope i can get the list done because as you see, I would rather read, write and watch a whole season of HBO's Newsroom (OMG- a free weekend of HBO is not a good thing when a person has a lot to do!) than pack up my house.
So- I have always wanted to live overseas and since I did not do it in my youth, I retired from teaching in the US took my first overseas teaching position at an international school in Myanmar (formally Burma). As I continued my teaching abroad, my next stop- Guatemala. This blog is about day to day happenings in both of these lovely countries as well as reflect on the lessons I am learning from this experience. The posts about Guatemala begin on July 29th, 2018
